Senior Electrical Design Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

b19 is partnering with an established renewable energy company to find an experienced Senior Electrical Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role is focused on the detailed engineering and design of AC collector systems, medium-voltage electrical infrastructure, and associated balance-of-plant (BOP) systems from concept through construction.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in electrical utility design, including collector systems, conductor sizing, equipment selection, and California GO95 requirements. Experience designing utility-scale battery storage facilities is essential.

Responsibilities
\n
\n
Electrical Design
\n
\n - Lead the electrical design of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) collector systems.
\n - Develop engineering packages from conceptual design through Issued for Construction (IFC).
\n - Design medium-voltage AC collector systems, including overhead and underground distribution.
\n - Produce and review:
\n - Single-line diagrams
\n - Collector system layouts
\n - Electrical site plans
\n - Conduit and cable routing drawings
\n - Equipment layouts
\n - Bill of Materials (BOMs)
\n - Size medium-voltage and low-voltage conductors, cables, conduit systems, and raceways.
\n - Perform voltage drop, ampacity, fault current, and equipment loading calculations.
\n - Develop grounding and bonding designs for BESS facilities.
\n - Select and specify electrical equipment including:
\n - Pad-mounted transformers
\n - Medium-voltage switchgear
\n - Reclosers
\n - Sectionalizing switches
\n - Metering equipment
\n - Protective devices
\n - Underground structures and duct banks
\n

\n
Utility & Collector System Design
\n
\n
\n - Design overhead collector systems in accordance with GO95 requirements and applicable utility standards.
\n - Develop pole loading calculations and construction packages where applicable.
\n - Coordinate utility interconnection requirements for collector system interfaces.
\n - Prepare construction drawings for overhead and underground distribution systems.
\n - Ensure compliance with utility engineering standards and applicable electrical codes.

Project Delivery
\n
\n
\n - Support projects from early development through detailed engineering and construction.
\n - Coordinate with civil, structural, and mechanical disciplines to integrate electrical designs.
\n - Review vendor drawings and equipment submittals for compliance with project requirements.
\n - Prepare technical specifications and support procurement activities.
\n - Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) and provide engineering support during construction.
\n - Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site inspections, and commissioning activities as required.

Client & Team Collaboration
\n
\n
\n - Serve as a technical lead during client meetings and design reviews.
\n - Develop engineering scopes, schedules, and cost estimates.
\n - Mentor junior engineers and designers.
\n - Support continuous improvement of engineering standards, templates, and design procedures.

Qualifications
\n
\n
\n - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
\n - 7+ years of electrical design experience in utility, renewable energy, or Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
\n - Strong experience designing medium-voltage collector systems.
\n - Demonstrated knowledge of California GO95 standards.
\n - Experience sizing conductors, cables, conduit, raceways, and electrical equipment.
\n - Experience preparing construction drawing packages using AutoCAD.
\n - Working knowledge of:
\n - NEC
\n - NESC
\n - GO95
\n - IEEE standards
\n - Utility engineering standards
\n - Strong understanding of electrical balance-of-plant (eBOP) design.
\n - Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
\n - Experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) or renewable energy projects.
\n - Experience designing collector systems for solar or battery storage facilities.
\n - Familiarity with utility interconnection requirements and construction practices.
\n - Experience using ETAP, EasyPower, CYMCAP, or similar engineering software.
\n - Knowledge of grounding design, cable ampacity studies, and equipment specification development.
\n - Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering projects.
\n - Strong written and verbal communication skills.
